TEREA sticks work by induction: the IQOS ILUMA device creates a magnetic field that heats a small metal element inside the stick, and that element warms the tobacco around it. Nothing burns and there is no heating blade. Here is the process step by step.
The parts involved
- The stick. Each TEREA stick has a tobacco section with a thin metal heating element sealed inside it, a cooling section and a filter.
- The device. An IQOS ILUMA holder has an induction coil around the chamber where the stick sits. Philip Morris International calls this the SmartCore Induction System.
What happens in a session
- You insert the stick. ILUMA devices can detect the stick and start heating automatically, or you can start with the button, depending on the model.
- The coil heats the metal element inside the stick. The tobacco is warmed from the centre outward.
- The device signals when it is ready, usually with a vibration and its lights.
- You use the stick until the device signals the end of the session, then remove and discard it.

Why there is no blade
Older IQOS devices pushed a heating blade into the tobacco. That blade could break and needed regular cleaning. With induction the heat source is inside each stick, so the device chamber stays much cleaner and there is no blade to damage. Why TEREA only works in ILUMA devices
A TEREA stick has no way to heat up without an induction coil, and a blade device would be damaged by the metal element. That is why TEREA is only for ILUMA and ILUMA i devices, such as the ILUMA i Prime, ILUMA i One and ILUMA Prime.
